Feeling like a local today .. I made my first transaction of any complexity when the warning light came on in the car for worn disc pads (le pasticche dei Freni, pronounced Pasteek, not pasteesh as I said it). When asked when the light first came on I said domani (tomorrow! How could I be so stupido). Quickly realising my mistake I got the phrase book out and any slight chance I had of appearing to know what I was doing went out of the window. (Yesterday is ieri - duh).
They fixed it subito, but there was a hiatus whilst one of the mechanichos went to get the parts. We filled the time pleasantly with a flowing conversation about the weather, the driving, where we’d been/ where we were going and which were the best tyres to buy. At least that’s what I was trying to talk about, what he said was a complete mystery to me. I don’t think he was telling me that the car was in a dangerous condition and would explode the next time I travelled more than 100 KPH, but looking back, he seemed to be unduly excited if he was really talking about the amount of rain they’d had.
In the afternoon we went to the beach, we could see a mile in one direction and about 10 miles the other and not a soul in sight. Within 5 minutes a young couple came and sat a few feet away on our right. I’m not sure exactly what they were doing, but it looked like she was trying to suck his face off. Another five minutes and an old bloke sat a few feet to our left and took all his clothes off. The rest of the beach remained deserted.
