Monte sant Angelo, Galgarno

Blog 9
We had a great day on the beach at Mattinata Lido. Freshly groomed gravel (better than it sounds) and turquoise sea that was easy to get into, it shelved so steeply that after 3 strides you were up to your neck. We probably looked cool getting in, but getting out was less graceful. The pebbles didn’t support your weight as you climbed up the shelf and the waves washed you back or pushed you onto your face, or both. I ended up with gravel in my gusset. That was Sunday 10th April.
On the 11th we went to Abbey Pulsano where the hermits lived on shelves and caves on the limestone cliffs. They were so inaccessible that their groceries (bread and seeds) had to be delivered by rope. On feast days they were allowed some wine. There must’ve been quite a few of them, and an image came to mind of them getting a bit fuelled up on the booze and having a set too with their neighbours (maybe over the hedge between them or loud chanting late at night), with disastrous consequences. I’ve circled the most palatial of the dwellings we saw below ..
