Lydia took part in the Student rally yesterday, to peacefully show solidarity with the proletariat and the ever decreasing likelihood that people will ignore their phobia of debt and take the risk of embarking on a path of further education.
It looked like a bit of a well behaved march for the genuine students who were there (as a pose to the extremist factions who smashed up Tory HQ) and I put this good natured approach down to the kind of music art students listen to these days. When I was a student and went on Strike (skipped a lecture) in solidarity with the first miners strike, we were whipped up into a frenzy by excruciatingly self consciously serious stuff by Jimmie Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Led Zep and self destructive forces were germinated whilst listening to Leonard Cohen. By contrast Lydia was listening to The Righteous Brothers "My Boat is Coming in", "Take Good Care of Yourself" by the Supremes, "Good Morning" from Singing in the Rain ... how can anybody play the part of the tortured artist determined to fight exploitation whatever the personal cost, whilst whistling those tunes.
Went to the Odeon to see "Another Year" last night. Not recommended unless you are in such a good mood you need a calm down. But I liked the line purporting to be from a landlord in Hull " .. yer OK at Darts Ken, but if you start talking about politics again .. yer barred". Could be me, apart from the darts bit.
